Start here if you are not sure what a pre-production project is!

Note - you do NOT have to wait for one stage to be complete before starting the next. You can start working on audience and desk research while waiting for your client to respond, for example.

STAGE 1 - THE IDEA - COMPLETE BY MONDAY MAY 18

BRIEF:
I am planning to do a video introducing and helping students who want to do peer-mentoring. My client will be Mrs. Ryan or Mrs. Thomas. My target audience would be teenagers/students who would like to take part in this peer-mentoring program. My initial idea is to make this video as interesting to the viewers as possible and to try and add a twist to it to make it unique and un-cliche due to the fact that most education related videos are dull and boring to many viewers. DO YOU HAVE SOME EVIDENCE OF THIS? The video will be edited to have moderately fast transitions and pop type music. The information will be from my clients and will be presented in interesting way so that the viewers will not get bored. My initial plan is to film one of the peer-mentoring sessions, AREN"T THEY CONFIDENTIAL? I'll ask for permission. add voice overs, have some people act out things etc. (Still thinking)

CONTACT E-MAIL #1:
Hello Mrs.Ryan
I am currently working on a pre-production for GCSE media and am thinking of doing a video to introduce students to Peer-Mentoring which helps students who would like to do it. If this would be useful to you, would you be willing to answer some questions through e-mails and maybe a little bit of filming of the peer-mentoring sessions?

Reply: Dear Yoji,

I would be delighted to help, please forward me any questions.

What are you planning to do? Who is your client? Who is your target audience? What is the purpose of your piece? In this section, you can include any ideas, notes, sketches of initial planning and ideas. You should have received feedback on the sisfilm thread and you can see who else is working in the same area on the SISTV page; this advice can count as part of your research and may well be mentioned in your final project.

Basically, here you should have a short, focused description (100 - 200 words) of what you are doing, who it is for, and what its purpose is.

STAGE 2 - RESEARCH - COMPLETE BY MONDAY MAY 25

DESK RESEARCH:
WWF Canada Promotional Video:
This video was made to promote awareness of things people do that make the world change in bad ways and how they could change it. This is done by having a very happy, major key soundtrack which contrasts with what the audience is watching, this gives the impression that everything that is happening on the video is happy and good although the things being shown are all things that harm someone or something in a way, this makes the music and video contrast and creates a enigma which makes the audience want to continue watching. There is also a hint of sexual attraction at the start when all you can see is a woman’s behind and a glass of whiskey which draws male viewers to watch it. The pallet of this video turns from light to dark then to light again, this is done fist to set make the audience think it would be a happy nice kind of video then to create a enigma with the dark pallet so that the viewers would start thinking more. The editing is at a moderately fast pace to show how fast we are “changing the world”. The video changes when the text “The world has changed. You can too.” Comes up it changes into a lighter pallet with more “green” and a man riding a bike which connotes an “environmentally friendly” or “good.” Way to travel which contrasts the scenes before it, this gives viewers a sense that you should “change” and that it would make their life “lighter”

Peer-Mentoring Introductory Video:
This video was made to introduce people to peer-mentoring. The pallet is quite light to tell the audience that peer-mentoring is a happy, nice and good thing, it also give the impression that it is in a way “pure”. The editing is just transitions to make it a little bit more interesting.

The most important thing about this video is that it is introducing peer-mentoring to students and information is the most important content, so there isn’t very much going on so that the man on the chair can go through most things in the short amount of time given.

You need to find and analyse at least TWO existing examples of the text type you are planning to make. So, for example, if you are planning to make a promotional video, you need to track down existing examples, embed the videos here, and write a brief (300 - 500 words) analysis of each of them.

AUDIENCE RESEARCH:

Having looked here, you should have decided the best way to gather information about what your audience will like and respond to. On this page, you need to include an example of your research methods (eg a link to the online questionnaire you used, a copy of the paper questionnaire or a link to the recording of the interviews you conducted) AND the analysis of the results. The results need to be presented well (Excel or Numbers, please) AND you should be able to show what you have learned about your audience's likes and dislikes and which approaches are likely to work.

STAGE 3 - THE PRE-PRODUCTION - COMPLETE BY MONDAY JUNE 8

The storyboard / mock up / whatever planning method is appropriate to your task. It should be digitised and embedded on this page. You should be able to show what influence the results of your market research have had on your final ideas and approach.

STAGE 4 - THE EVALUATION - COMPLETE BY FRIDAY JUNE 12

Look here for instructions.

STAGE 5 - THE BONUS!

You should have designed a logo for SIS TV. Include your design (and a brief paragraph explaining what you were trying to achieve) here.
