Mikan Sakura, Gakuen Alice

Mikan Sakura
from Gakuen Alice, an anime.

About the anime:
It's an anime based off the manga of the same name, drawn by Tachibana Higuchi.
Produced by Aniplex and Group TAC, which ran from 2004 to 2005.

About the character:
Her name is Mikan Sakura, the female protagonist of Gakuen Alice. She has the power of 'nullification', which apparently spots other powers from working. At first, she's a 10 year old (she's still 10, actually) country girl who's never been to Tokyo (the story's setting is in Japan), but when her best friend moved to attend a 'special school' (Alice Academy, in English, and Gakuen Alice, inJapanese. It's a school for the gifted), Mikan followed her to Tokyo. Quite wistfully, actually. Luckily, she managed to find this school, and find herself a power, too! So her story starts there.

Like many shojo (girl) animes, the girl is very clumsy, but has a good intention at all times. Mikan is energetic, and perhaps overly so. Her power, nullification, somewhat portray her as a 'useless' character. However, as the story progresses, it shows that her power may not be the best, but her good intentions moved a lot of the other characters - most of these characters the type that is bitter about life, or just plain silently cold.

From my point of view, Mikan Sakura is a fairly typical character - for a girl anime, that is. Her appearance places her as extremely plain, however, her actions put her above others. At first, because she's the new girl and is naive about the world, and then, because she's involved with another character (by that, I mean that they're 'partners', or rather, 'buddies') and that character is famous in the school. Although she would be a plain character without the other characters to enhance her, Mikan somehow found herself in the center of attention all the time. Which is a stereotypical concept of girl animes, especially when the character is not even trying.

This character, I think, is aimed at younger audience. Kids and female teenagers. This is because she is portrayed as extremely young and naive (being 10 years old and all - but even more to the extreme with her naivety), allowing the audience to relate to her. Mikan always has a good intention, even if her clumsiness messes up. The female aspect of the audience may want to be more like her, because she always end up helping people with her pure hearted abilities. Kids may also be attracted to the character because she's the main comedic point of the anime - that is to say, she's the one who makes the most faces, according to situations.
