Start here if you are not sure what a pre-production project is!

Note - you do NOT have to wait for one stage to be complete before starting the next. You can start working on audience and desk research while waiting for your client to respond, for example.

STAGE 1 - THE IDEA - COMPLETE BY MONDAY MAY 18

I am planning to make a marketing DVD for QBS as an introduction to the school. Our client is QBS, and the target audience is parents and staff who are interested in enrolling their child to QBS/working in QBS. This is the group email sent to QBS, detailing our interest in working in this project:

Dear Ms Gardiner,
I am writing to you on behalf of a group of students from South Island School who studies GCSE Media Studies and for our Pre-Production Coursework assignment. We have found your request on our media studies website and are willing to work with you to produce the product.http://sismedia.wetpaint.com/page/SIS+Primary+ChannelNumber 8.We are wondering if we could meet with you and discuss the details for this project.

These are the students who are willing to work with you :

Vanessa Lo
Eric Chow
Marvin Tam
Michael Leung

Thanks for your time, we are looking forward to work with you.

Yours Faithfully,

Vanessa Lo

So, is Vanesa doing all the work? What have YOU done?

STAGE 2 - RESEARCH - COMPLETE BY MONDAY MAY 25

DESK RESEARCH:

You need to find and analyse at least TWO existing examples of the text type you are planning to make. So, for example, if you are planning to make a promotional video, you need to track down existing examples, embed the videos here, and write a brief (300 - 500 words) analysis of each of them.

The video I used is a promotional video for the International School of Beijing. The video is about 9 minutes long, and my video would be a few minutes shorter, but it has a basic idea that I am trying to accomplish. There are short interviews with parents, students, and teachers about living in Beijing.

The video features in detail the activities that students can participate in after school, as well as life in China.

This promotional video for a school uses different clips, with each clip being shown for only a few seconds to show variety. This makes the video short, and it is targeted towards prospective students and parents of these students, rather than prospective staff members. It uses a mixture of both video and picture slideshows, in order to show both action as well as moments not captured on video. The video uses a variety of camera shots, the majority of which are mid shots and long shots. This allows the audience to see everything that happens in the video.

AUDIENCE RESEARCH:

Having looked here, you should have decided the best way to gather information about what your audience will like and respond to. On this page, you need to include an example of your research methods (eg a link to the online questionnaire you used, a copy of the paper questionnaire or a link to the recording of the interviews you conducted) AND the analysis of the results. The results need to be presented well (Excel or Numbers, please) AND you should be able to show what you have learned about your audience's likes and dislikes and which approaches are likely to work.

SurveyMonkey questionnaire for pre-production

Below is the spreadsheet I created to store the results from my questionnaire:

Remember - it's more important to actually analyse what the results tell you than to present them nicely! (The ideal, of course, would be to do both.)

STAGE 3 - THE PRE-PRODUCTION - COMPLETE BY MONDAY JUNE 8

The storyboard / mock up / whatever planning method is appropriate to your task. It should be digitised and embedded on this page. You should be able to show what influence the results of your market research have had on your final ideas and approach.

STAGE 4 - THE EVALUATION - COMPLETE BY FRIDAY JUNE 12

Look here for instructions.

STAGE 5 - THE BONUS!

You should have designed a logo for SIS TV. Include your design (and a brief paragraph explaining what you were trying to achieve) here.
