Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen
“Bohemian Rhapsody” can considerably be one of the most famous music videos of all time, this was mainly because this was the first music video made, and set the standards of music videos. The genre of Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen is classic rock, and it includes several opera elements. It was released in 1975, where the hippie’s were a vogue.

The visual aspect: all of the band members have long hair—part of the hippie culture during the 1970s when it was popular. Some jewellery was worn, and their white and shiny outfits in the music video were one of the important codes which show their rock star genre. The background lighting effects in neon color also differentiate them from other genres of music. The darkness of the background also shows that they are a rock band as rock bands tend to be dark. The members of the band are all men just like many bands before (now many bands have female members).

Instrumentally speaking, guitars, drums, and the piano were shown the music video, portraying that they are a rock band as these are the instruments rock bands typically use. Furthermore, Queen are showed playing their instruments, as it is rock fans to know that the band in question can actually play their instruments.

Here It Goes Again by OK Go

The genre of Here It Goes Again by OK Go is indie rock. We can tell they are an indie band as their music video is one shot through, which means they didn’t include and cuts and needed no editing. This makes the video aesthetically appear cheap, a prevalent trademark in indie videos, as indie bands do not often have much money to spend on their videos. The music video is very simple with only the treadmills included. We know that they are different from rock bands as they wear colorful clothes, while rock bands usually wear shiny clothing. They also have choreography in the music video while rock bands tend to not dance. The music video has a bright background unlike the music video of Bohemian Rhapsody where it was dark. No instruments were shown here; instead, they started the music by simply pressing play on a remote.

There aren’t any special lighting effects, and was obvious the singers here were mouthing to the music. One thing which is the same is that the group members were all men as well. Other than that, the background, editing, clothes, instrument, etc were all different to the music video of Bohemian Rhapsody.

The Genre of the song Bohemian Rhapsody is Rock; it was recorded by a band called Queen in 1975. In the ‘promotional video’ (known as one of the first music videos, and was also voted best video of all time) they have followed a number of conventions suitable for this genre:

- Long hair
- Jewelry
- Shiny clothes
- Over exaggerated body movements
- Guitars
- Loud music
- Neon colors
- Lighting effects
- All men
- Hippie style clothes (white and purple)
- Versatile
- Calm- loud- calm

The Genre of the song ‘here it goes again’ is Power pop (a mix of rock and pop), it was recorded by a band called OK Go in 2004- 2005. It got all its fame from being on You Tube as it become the 13th most viewed on that website of all time. It became the US top 40’s song and the video is supposed to be responsible for that. Although the costs for the video are kept very low as they don’t move sets at all, therefore no editing. In the music video they have stuck to certain codes so that it can be recognized as a ‘power pop’ song:

- Strange/unique clothing
- Bald
- No editing
- Only use treadmills throughout entire video (quite unusual)
- Facial hair
- Guitar
- Keyboard
- Plain silver background (looks like aluminum)
- Nothing fancy

The genre for Bohemian Rhapsody would be Rock but with a hint of opera in it and this will be aimed at people who are interested in this sort of music so it would an older target audience as a pose to myself.

The genre for Here it goes again would be Rock aagin but this time with a cool sort of touch to it. It is because of the teenage touch that the target audience for Here it goes again would be diferent to Bohemian Rhapsody. I would say the target audience for Here it goes again would be for teenagers.
