Note - you do NOT have to wait for one stage to be complete before starting the next. You can start working on audience and desk research while waiting for your client to respond, for example.

STAGE 1 - THE IDEA - COMPLETE BY MONDAY MAY 18

BRIEF:

I am planning on making a documentary type film on Summer Junkiez a local band in Hong Kong. My Client would be Summer Junkiez, and my target audience would be teenagers around the age of (12-18) who like pop rock. My purpose is the let more people know about them because I feel they are talented and even though they are quite well known more people should know about them.

My main idea is like to start off with them playing and then throughout I will put interviews of them. I want them to say basically who they are, what they are in to, history anything that would interest fans and other people. I also want to go to one of their performances and capture them playing, this would give people a feel of what they are like live. Basically thought out the 5 minutes I will have one of their songs

I will use a lot a fast editing and have a high quality sound as I want people to hear them.

First Email.

Dear Summer Junkiez
My name is Calvin, I am a student from South island School in Aberdeen and currently I am doing a media project for my GCSE and I was hoping that you guys will allow me to make a promotional video of the band, because I think you guys are really talented and I want more people to know about you. Right now this is the planning stage so we can discuss about this. I am thinking of doing a documentary so there will be an interview so you can introduce yourselves, and maybe I can capture some footages of your upcoming shows.
I'll be waiting for your reply.

First Reply.

Hi Calvin,

im sorry for the really late reply! Unfortunately, Summer Junkiez is on hold for the moment because i (Anthony - Vocals) am in SouthAfrica at the moment and will be for the next year or so. I'm learning to be a pilot. Hopefully i'll be back in Hong Kong in a years time.

Anyway, if youhave any questions you'd like to ask about Summer Junkiez. I'm sure that you can call Jamez (guitar) on 9041 2266.

Take it easy and hope your project goes well.

Anthony

What can you actually do in a maximum of 5 mins? Have you contacted them? Have they agreed to this? Where's the evidence?

STAGE 2 - RESEARCH - COMPLETE BY MONDAY MAY 25

DESK RESEARCH:

You need to find and analyse at least TWO existing examples of the text type you are planning to make. So, for example, if you are planning to make a promotional video, you need to track down existing examples, embed the videos here, and write a brief (300 - 500 words) analysis of each of them.

This type of documentary shows everything about the band going on a tour, this video has everything about their shows, what they do backstage, how the band travels around, how they live etc.
The documentary starts off serif title with a white background, the title says it is episode 1 so that shows there are more parts to the show. Then it begins with the band preparing for a performance, then the camera shows each of the band members and their names with a handwriting font. The sans serif font shows that this is targeted at teenagers and young adults.
The background music is played by the band, this introduces some of the music they play. Then there is some footage of the band performing which gives the audience some idea of what they are like. The music is calm and fits the sort of the introduction theme
In the video they have a few other people talking about the band as a sort of an introduction to them, there is voice over them playing explaining what type band they are.
The cutting is slow and the video becomes very boring shortly. The type of palette is plain and bright, this video is more focused on the band than how they came together, history etc. There isn't much editing which makes the video very boring and plain also it is quite long which makes it tiring to watch.
This is filmed as if you are with them for the tour which makes it more personal.

The Video starts off with the two guitar players of the band introducing what is happening, this type of documentary is focusing the making of the album.
The audience of this would be fans of Avenged Sevenfold. This is aimed at teenagers around the age of (13-18) and young adults.
The humor and swearing also shows it is aimed at a teenage audience. In the background they have the song they are explaining playing this gives a better idea of they are trying to say, unlike the previous video members explain about how the songs came about.
The video has quite a number of shots of what the band members are like when the are not performing ,so you can relate them to being as ordinary people.
In the video there is some voice over whilst they were recording to explain thoughts and feelings, this keeps the audience interested.
The palette of this video is dark and dull, which shows it is aimed at teenagers and because the band is Heavy Metal.
There is not much editing and maybe none at all, this is because it is filmed as a sort interview type video.
There is fast and short cutting each frames last as much as 10-15 seconds this keeps the viewer more interested.
Showing the stages of how a song is made can inspire fans and other people. The video has a few interviews from the members, this uses the hypodermic needle theory, as there is a direct flow of information between the member and the viewer.

AUDIENCE RESEARCH:

Online survey:
The link to the survey is here

Calvin Lee - Media@SISWhich type of music do you prefer?

From this survey it shows that the majority of the people around the age of 11-16 prefer pop and pop rock. This will allow me to use Summer Junkiez because they are pop rock/ indies. As most of my results are from the age of 11-16 I will need faster cutting and shorter shots to keep them interested.

Would you watch a documentary on your favorite band? What would you expect to see in a documentary

From these two questions, would you watch a documentary on your favorite band and what would you usually expect to see in a documentary shows that 50% of the people asked do want to watch documentaries on their favorite band. Also they would expect to see the band playing, behind the scenes. I would try to include these as much a possible in my video.

Why would you watch these documentaries?Calvin Lee - Media@SIS

From the question I found out that most people I asked only watch documentaries if they know the band or are interested, and also they would only be interested after hearing them. To make sure my video would interest I need to make it popular.

AUDIENCE RESEARCH NEEDS TO BE MUCH BETTER ANALYSED

Having looked here, you should have decided the best way to gather information about what your audience will like and respond to. On this page, you need to include an example of your research methods (eg a link to the online questionnaire you used, a copy of the paper questionnaire or a link to the recording of the interviews you conducted) AND the analysis of the results. The results need to be presented well (Excel or Numbers, please) AND you should be able to show what you have learned about your audience's likes and dislikes and which approaches are likely to work.

STAGE 3 - THE PRE-PRODUCTION - COMPLETE BY MONDAY JUNE 8

The storyboard / mock up / whatever planning method is appropriate to your task. It should be digitised and embedded on this page. You should be able to show what influence the results of your market research have had on your final ideas and approach.

STAGE 4 - THE EVALUATION - COMPLETE BY FRIDAY JUNE 12

Look here for instructions.

STAGE 5 - THE BONUS!

You should have designed a logo for SIS TV. Include your design (and a brief paragraph explaining what you were trying to achieve) here.
