Start here if you are not sure what a pre-production project is!

Note - you do NOT have to wait for one stage to be complete before starting the next. You can start working on audience and desk research while waiting for your client to respond, for example.

STAGE 1 - THE IDEA - COMPLETE BY MONDAY MAY 18

BRIEF:

I am planning on doing a promotional video for DB Green. This is what the client, Tracy Read wants:

"DB (Discovery Bay) Green are interested in local students getting involved in promoting their beach clean-up, tree planting and general environmental program."

My promotional video will be on the beach clean-up part of the program, and will be trying to get people, mainly students from secondary school years to
get involved. Since most of the students coming from DB are from West Island, the promotional video will have to have them as the target audience.

EXCELLENT idea. Why is Tiare doing all the work?

STAGE 2 - RESEARCH - COMPLETE BY MONDAY MAY 25

DESK RESEARCH:

This is a promotional video on how to save the earth, based on what you buy. It uses humor to get the audience to continue watching it. The pallet is very white, as well as the lighting being very clear and shows everything, making this video nice and easy to see. The pallet and lighting also show that this is not a scary or shocking film and the actors are not really aliens- they are just like humans, making this video easy to relate to for people of all ages.

The target audience is basically everyone- they use words such as "toilet" to show how bad something is, which makes it easy for children to understand, but also have humor in it that really only understandable to someone older. Another example is when a picture of President Bush comes up. A child would only laugh at the silly expressions on the faces of the aliens- an adult would laugh because they would have actually got the joke. This makes the video enjoyable for people of all ages.

The "bad guy" is also easy to make out, as the clothes he wears are darker then the other actors, and he is usually the one who makes the naughty jokes. The good guy is easy to relate to for kids as he is younger and talks using much more simple words. The music also tells the bad guy out from the good guy, as peaceful, quiet music plays when the good guy talks and darker, lower music plays when the bad guy talks.

This video is for demographics A-C2 because to watch the video a person would need the necessary equipment (such as a computer and the internet).

This is a promotional video aimed at shocking people into saving the environment for their childrens future. The pallet is very simple, just black and white. The shot is a mid shot of the boy, showing his upper body and keeps still throughout the video. There is no music or sound apart from the boy in the video, and he talks quite softly, meaning that a person would actually have to listen to hear him properly. The actor conveys a lot of anger through his voice and his facial expressions, and goes straight to the point, immediatly blaming the adults for global warming. This can be quite shocking, as it just comes out with what it wants to say as soon as it starts, with no starting title or anything else. This is aimed for adults, and apart from actually saying its for adults, it is quite still bland, something a child would not find that interesting.

This video is for demographics A- C2 as well, as to view the video people would need a computer and internet and other nessesary equipment, just like the first video.

AUDIENCE RESEARCH:

Arran Harding - Media@SIS

As shown, out of all the people who took the servery, most were girls. This means that in theory, the promotional video should be aimed mainly at girls. However, it could just mean that girls are just patient enough to fill in this servery. However, if they are patient enough to fill it out, then they would probably watch the video anyway. This means my promotional video will have to put something that would keep girls interested.

Arran Harding - Media@SIS
This is just to find out how many people would be interested in my promotional video. Most people said "sometimes" so my video will have to keep their attention in some way, either by having fast paced shots and editing (Promotional video is aimed for people in secondary school) or by having something that will make them want to go, like giving CAS hours.

Arran Harding - Media@SIS

This was to find out if anyone would be willing to join DB Green. Most people have not joined any, so to get them to join there would have to be something that will interest them into joining. Maybe CAS hours, or as a focus week trip.

Arran Harding - Media@SIS
This was to find out what people would be concerned about. Since air pollution is the highest, followed by water pollution, I will probably add air pollution and also water pollution in to my promotional video.

Arran Harding - Media@SIS

This question is not asked in the best way, as most people do take public transport. However, it could be added into my video, along with the two other highest ones, planting trees and cleaning the beaches.

Arran Harding - Media@SIS
This clearly shows that most people who took my servery would respond best to shocking videos. However, my client wants the video to be funny, and funny is the next highest on the graph. I'm not sure a funny/shocking video could work, but I could give it a try.

I am not very happy with how I made this servery, and it was only after when I checked the results did I find that there were alot more questions needed to be asked, or there were questions that were not so well thought of, such as taking public transport.

Here are some ideas that could be added to my promotional video that have been reviewed with by Tracy Read and Tiare:

Compulsory things needed to be added to the video

Beach clean-up the second sunday of every week
-needed to be added to my promotional video so people know when to go to it

Website of DB Green

Things the video needs to be:

-Fun
-A family event
-Fitness
-Sense of achievement
-Meeting new people

NOT:

-Dangerous
-Dirty
-Gross

Optional ideas (some not even based on the promotional video)

CAS/ focus week
- having beach cleanup as a CAS activity giving CAS hours or having it for focus week
-will make it more popular with the older students, because of the CAS hours

Green day
-wear green shirts to school

Having looked here, you should have decided the best way to gather information about what your audience will like and respond to. On this page, you need to include an example of your research methods (eg a link to the online questionnaire you used, a copy of the paper questionnaire or a link to the recording of the interviews you conducted) AND the analysis of the results. The results need to be presented well (Excel or Numbers, please) AND you should be able to show what you have learned about your audience's likes and dislikes and which approaches are likely to work.

STAGE 3 - THE PRE-PRODUCTION - COMPLETE BY MONDAY JUNE 8

The storyboard / mock up / whatever planning method is appropriate to your task. It should be digitised and embedded on this page. You should be able to show what influence the results of your market research have had on your final ideas and approach.

STAGE 4 - THE EVALUATION - COMPLETE BY FRIDAY JUNE 12

Look here for instructions.

STAGE 5 - THE BONUS!

SIS TV LOGO 1
A logo me and Calvin made.
credit for Calvin for thinking of the "TV" bit

You should have designed a logo for SIS TV. Include your design (and a brief paragraph explaining what you were trying to achieve) here.
